In recent months, the Allen Street Hardware Café which,
since its inception in the Spring of 2004 has had an eclectic
and broad range of musical performances, is taking a stronger
and more aggressive position into the world of jazz. Drawing
on the incredible range of talent that is available in Toronto,
Hardware has booked several acts from there. For quite some
time, Brownman, one of that city's most acclaimed trumpeter,
a JUNO award winner and a major global touring artist, has,
with his trio, been a monthly feature at Hardware. To that list
of Canadian artists, Hardware has now added a singer named Laura
Hubert. Discovered in a bar in Toronto, Miss Hubert, at times
sounding like Billy Holiday, at times like Edith Piaf and at
other times like Janis Joplin is a rare, powerful and compelling
jazz vocalist who will someday be a headliner at major international
jazz clubs. When the Calumet Arts Café first brought
Diana Krall to Buffalo as an unknown and unheralded singer,
the impact was instant and impressive. Now Hardware promises
the same with Laura Hubert.
